Join us for an immersive two-day workshop for chef trainers to create a culture of learning and improve their student evaluation techniques. Our goal is to provide examples, insight, and training modules to help chef trainers engage students from day one by creating a strong culture of learning in the kitchen and classroom. This workshop gives chefs and front-line instructors the tools and techniques to effectively coach, teach, and provide critical feedback to their training populations. FareStart is our parent organization and has been helping people transform their lives through food for over 25 years – one person, one job, and one community at a time. FareStart helps people overcome barriers to employment by teaching them work and life skills they need to succeed in the foodservice industry. Through their 2 restaurants, 3 cafes, catering company, and programs that provide meals to social services, shelters, and schools in the Seattle area, participants in their programs get practical work experience while giving back to their community. FareStart’s program will provide wonderful real-time examples for student training in action and how to develop strong communication lines between operational and programs staff to benefit the student’s personal & professional development. Workshop facilitator and Program Development Manager Justin Smith has years of experience through his time as a Chef Trainer for FareStart and Inspiration Corporation in student training & curriculum development. This workshop has been specifically designed for social enterprise job training programs and will address how to balance student training support needs with the production demands of a business environment. Participants will learn how to: Establish a culture of learning in the kitchen and classroom through our Coaching Champions course. Engage students from day 1 with consistent language, guidelines, and teaching techniques. Lead effective classroom and kitchen lessons for diverse learners. Write productive recurring student evaluations for improved departmental communications. Build person-centric language and approach to training that foster stable program growth and retention. Improve communication regarding student progression among different departments to provide a holistic approach to the student experience and training progress. Create and enhance their own lessons and assessment that fit the unique service populations across the Catalyst Kitchens network.
