The Art of Making Big Pots – with Imogen Taylor-Noble

The Art of Making Big Pots Bookings go live 18th November 2019 Bookings Close 15th June 2020 Learn hand building techniques for making large scale pots. Using a range of techniques that I originally learnt from Asabe Magaji and Asibi Iddo, potters from Nigeria who had worked with Michael Cardew at Abuja Pottery, and from Kenyan born British potter Magdalene Odundo. We will use methods of thumping, coiling, paddling and stretching to form the giant pots before refining them with a variety of tools. We will explore a range of different hand building techniques suitable for making large scale pots. We will use robust, quite coarse clays, which can support the scale of the pots being made. We will use simple tools to shape the clay and to refine the pots once complete. We will speed dry the pots to enable us to work on more than one at a time using a range of methods.  We will discuss decorative possibilities, although in the time that we have the main focus will be on form and scale.
