PREVIEW PARTY: Tempera – David Tindle & Antony Williams

As part of our focus on the medium of tempera we present a body of works by two of its most celebrated masters: Antony Williams NEAC and David Tindle RA. Join us in the Long Gallery for a preview of the artworks before the exhibition opens to the public. The Mess Restaurant will also be open for supper. Antony Williams’ work is based on a direct and intense observation of the world around him, which results in paintings that convey a heightened sense of realism. His masterful use of the painter’s brush allows every surface detail to be given almost equal and constant consideration and his still lives and portraits underline the passing of time and mortality. David Tindle is among the most renowned British figurative painters of his generation. Certain subjects and motifs recur in his paintings, including windows, doorways, mirrors and screens, forming pictures within pictures that provide a subtle theatricality. Amongst Tindle’ s most eminent portrait commissions was to paint the actor Dirk Bogarde for the National Portrait Gallery in 1985.  “The images I paint are of things that I know or can remember best. I try to place them in an order that expresses the feelings I have about them. It is not a question of painting them as realistically as I can, but to get the right tonality, so that memory and presence are very close.”
