Thirty eight years of [modern] Lincoln Mystery plays and we welcome new director Tom Straszewski – bringing to Lincoln his enthusiasm, excellence and experience from artistic direction and regular involvement in the York Mystery Plays – Through deep and forensic knowledge of mystery plays, their heritage and contemporary relevance, Tom will interpret them for a modern day audience. By teasing out all of the hidden humour and humanity, presenting scenes and scenarios rarely aired and staging them in a manner never seen before, the show will be refreshing, relevant and performed with powerful immediacy. “The N-Town text used at Lincoln is deeply concerned with truth-telling and shaping stories,” says Tom, a scholar of mystery plays, which originated as a mechanism for bringing the Bible to life for the Medieval masses. “This speaks loudly at a time when truth feels unstable, politicians lie for power, and everybody has their own story to tell. This concept will guide the 2020 production, creating an ensemble who come together to tell their stories. Truth, Lies and Power being the theme for this production, we will be in for an exciting evening’s theatre! FAQs What is a TECH/DRESS? A tech dress rehearsal is a performance that is 95% ready for an audience. This will allow any technical issues or script/directorial problems to be ironed out at the last minute. It is very likely a photographer will be recording the event on this performance too, so there are some distractions and possible stop/starts during the show. Is the event outdoors? The location within Lincoln Cathedral is yet to be confirmed. We are hoping to be performing in the new ampitheater if it is completed in time. If not, the performance will be in The Chapterhouse. We will keep you informed of location over the next few monthe. If the location is outdoors, do prepare for a drop in temperature and possible wet weather.
