This workshop is eligible for 6.75 hours of clinical continuing education for LCSW, approved by NASW. It will be a thrilling and engaging day covering many topics regarding diversity and bias in all facets of life. Class will start promptly at 8:30am. Lunch break (not provided) will be approximately 12:00-1:00pm. Course evaluations will be held at the end of workshop. Course material summary: Recent social and political polarization has stressed individuals, families, and communities alike. People in public service or health care careers are in unique environments where professionalism equates to objectivity, tolerance and advocacy of social justice. However, it can be an uncomfortable surprise when an individual trained to be respectful is suddenly struggling to interact or understand clients, patients, co-workers, or people in our personal lives who have opposing value systems. How do we cope with our personal battle of recognizing there are limits to our tolerance? How do we find common ground with people whose attitudes are in opposition to ours? How can we find a way to hear another when we are actively engaging in mindsets and behaviors that reject their perspective because we want to protect our own moral values and world-views? We will explore the research from social psychology to help us 1) recognize some of the predictable patterns in human decision-making, 2) understand why and how people deny others and deceive themselves, and 3) use interactive and experiential methods to learn how to avoid these cognitive traps for use with clients and in our professional and personal lives.
