In this ambitious program, the Georgia Philharmonic takes on the modern Concerto for Orchestra by Bartok – called a concerto instead of a symphony because of the brilliant and difficult passages that each instrument plays during the course of the piece. Considered one of the great successes of modern music, the Concerto for Orchestra has become an orchestral staple. The classical operetta, The Impressario, was written by Mozart as a command performance for the emperor of the day while Mozart paused work on the Marriage of Figaro. The Overture from the Impressario was written with great care and passion given the importance of the occasion and stands today as an impressive orchestral work. The romantic lines of the Wild Dove tone poem by Dvorak round out the program showcasing the composer’s attention to “orchestral color and textural detail” while telling a charming story.
