What would Jane Jacobs do!? This walking tour explores the past and speculative future of what was once Chicago’s Black Metropolis. We’ll peel back some of the area’s many layers of history and **** the many outside forces that have shaped its past and shape it still. We’ll uncover scars from a century of upheavals, some of the neighborhoods’ lesser-known histories, and try to imagine a new Black Metropolis. And the role urban planning has played all along the way.“The trust of a city street is formed over time from many, many little public sidewalk contacts… Most of it is ostensibly trivial but the sum is not trivial at all.” ― Jane Jacobs Attendees will receive an «ABCs of Jane Jacobs» zine!2 CM Credits are available, for the Thursday event only!—BlackSpace is a collective of Black residents, changemakers, systems thinkers, learners, and lovers. We are moving away from perfunctory forms of engagement and instead towards planning that recognizes, affirms, and amplifies Black agency.
